David,
Washingtonians have entrusted me with the responsibility
to protect their rights as the people’s lawyer -- which is why I stand up to powerful
corporations, like Comcast, when their actions cheat the people of our
state.
We recently secured the largest ever trial judgment in a
state consumer protection case after a judge ruled that Comcast
violated Washington’s Consumer Protection Act more than 445,000 times.
In 2016, I became the first Attorney General in the
country to challenge Comcast for charging deceptive fees. We listened
to the Washingtonians who told us they’d been signed up to Comcast’s
Service Protection Plan without their consent, and were being billed $5
per month for a service they never ordered.
Ultimately, we learned that tens of thousands of
Washingtonians did not consent to the additional fees. Money was going
directly out of their accounts and into Comcast’s deep pockets.
At every turn, Comcast and its army of corporate lawyers
attempted to evade responsibility for their actions. I'm proud of the
hard work my team put into winning this case on behalf of the people of
Washington State. This is why I more than doubled the size of
Washington’s Consumer Protection Unit --
to protect every dollar earned by hardworking Washingtonians.
Comcast will pay a $9.1 million penalty plus full
restitution (including interest) to affected Washingtonians in the
largest ever trial award in a state consumer protection case.
Through this victory, we have once again demonstrated that
when we stand up to the world’s largest corporations in court for
harming the people of our state, we win.
Bob
