RIGGED... U.S. REPRESENTATIVE DAVID CICILLINE.

Dear David,

Our political system is rigged against working people. Corporate special interests have bought and paid for the Republican politicians in Washington who are advancing policies that help the wealthy and powerful at the expense of everyone else.

That’s why Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and I led 48 Senate Democrats and 145 Democratic Members of the House of Representatives in introducing legislation to expose the dark money and secret spending that is controlling American elections.

The DISCLOSE Act of 2018 would require organizations spending money in federal elections to disclose their donors, and help guard against hidden foreign interference in our democracy. It will bring a new level of transparency to our elections and ensure the American people know who is really fighting for them.

This bill is a key part of A Better Deal for Our Democracy — the Democratic plan to end the corruption in Washington that has paralyzed American politics. I will keep you updated on the work we’re doing to end the influence of corporate money, hold elected officials to high ethical standards, and make our government work for YOU.

MAKE OUR OCEANS POLLUTED AGAIN

Apparently when President Trump said he would ‘Make America Great Again,’ he wasn’t talking about Rhode Island.

The Trump administration's idea to roll back the National Ocean Policy is a terrible decision. This not only jeopardizes our environment, but makes it harder to generate economic activity through the coastal recreation and tourism that the Rhode Island shoreline attracts.

This decision is yet another example of how President Trump’s policies only hurt Rhode Islanders and make it harder for us to protect the beautiful oceans and coastline that surround our country.

MUSLIM BAN UPHELD BY THE SUPREME COURT

President Trump made it clear throughout the campaign that he wanted to limit the number of Muslims allowed to enter the United States. He put that rhetoric into action a few days into his presidency with the Muslim Ban. The Supreme Court ruling this week that upholds the President’s ban is an awful decision that undermines our security and our values.

The President's policies are making America less safe at home and less respected around the world. It is sad that the conservative majority on the Supreme Court ignored these basic facts in their decision. One day, we’ll look back on this ruling and wonder how we lost our way.

As Co-Chair of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee and a Member of the House Foreign Affairs and Judiciary Committees, I can assure you that I will continue fighting to stop the damage that President Trump’s policies are inflicting on the United States.

We are better than this.

MAJOR SETBACK FOR WORKING PEOPLE

The American labor movement has helped build the strong middle class of our country. However, earlier this week, using a stolen Supreme Court seat as the deciding vote, corporate special interests succeeded in overturning four decades of legal precedent that have protected the rights of working people in Rhode Island and across America.

Unions are the reason working men and women have weekends off, good wages, safe working conditions, and employer-provided health insurance. Unions fought to end child labor and expand family and medical leave. Wall Street, the big banks, and big business have spent decades trying to undermine those efforts. That's why the Court’s ruling this week is so devastating.

This decision is the latest in a long line of corporate-funded attacks that negatively impact the 17.3 million public employees across our country. Teachers, law enforcement, firefighters, and public works employees are going to find it harder than ever to get ahead.

This is wrong. If you work hard and play by the rules you should be able to provide for your family, buy a home, save for retirement, and provide your kids with a better life than the one you’ve had.

In this country, we should always honor hard work with a decent wage. The American Dream was meant for all of us, not just the wealthy few. Rest assured, I am going to continue fighting for a country that’s consistent with those values.

CO-SPONSORING LEGISLATION WITH RHODE ISLANDERS IN MIND

This week, the House passed two bipartisan bills that I co-sponsored.

The Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act (H.R. 299) will give Navy veterans access to care for Agent Orange exposure, and the Credit Access and Inclusion Act (H.R.434) will help consumers who pay their utility bills on time get better credit scores.

I am proud to join my colleagues in advancing these bills, and I look forward to seeing them taken up by the Senate.

SOUTH DAKOTA v WAYFAIR

Small and locally-owned businesses have withered on the vine for decades due to internet sales tax loopholes that barred states from collecting taxes from online retailers. However, last week, that loophole was closed by the Supreme Court’s ruling in South Dakota v Wayfair. The Court’s decision is a major victory for the economic lifeblood of our communities — our locally-owned businesses.

By ending this discriminatory tax shelter for remote sellers, the Court’s decision provides equal treatment for all businesses, and reduces state budget shortfalls by providing revenue that is critical for local infrastructure investments like bridges, roads, and broadband internet access, as well as for important public services like education, health care, and law enforcement.

As an original co-sponsor of the Remote Transaction Parity Act, and as Ranking Member of the House Subcommittee with jurisdiction over this matter, I look forward to working with all stakeholders to ensure that we have a sales tax system that works for everyone.

As always, if you or someone you know has any questions or concerns, please call my office at 729-5600 or send me an email at David.Cicilline@mail.house.gov.

Warm Regards,

I think it's important that you know about this. HILLARY CLINTON, ONWARD TOGETHER.

David --

Given the news coming out of the Supreme Court this week, I wanted to introduce you to the newest group that Onward Together is partnering with.

Demand Justice organizes progressive activists and voters around protecting our federal courts. In the time since the announcement from Justice Kennedy regarding his plans to retire at the end of July, Demand Justice has motivated thousands of people across the country to make calls and join protests demanding that Senate Democrats promise not to vote to confirm any of Trump’s extreme right-wing likely nominees for Justice Kennedy’s seat on the Supreme Court.

Reproductive rights, voting rights, access to health care -- so many things we hold dear hang in the balance if the Supreme Court swings to the right. Our court system is one of the important tools we have for keeping our country just and fair. Please take a moment today to learn more about how Demand Justice plans to protect it.

Thank you,

Hillary

Onward Together works to build a brighter future for generations to come by supporting groups that encourage people to organize in their communities or run for office. Because you're an important part of Onward Together, we wanted you to get a chance to know these groups a little bit better. To learn more about Onward Together, click here.

The organization: Demand Justice

The organizers: Brian Fallon, Executive Director

The mission: To protect the federal judiciary and stop Trump from hijacking the courts.

The story: In the wake of the 2016 election, veterans of Capitol Hill, the White House, and the Clinton and Obama campaigns came together to tackle the issue of keeping our courts balanced and fair by motivating progressive voters on issues related to the federal judiciary while influencing the Senate on judicial nominees.

The latest: After Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement from the Supreme Court, Demand Justice lept into action, launching a movement to demand that Democrats in the Senate oppose anyone on Donald Trump's SCOTUS shortlist.

The next step: Head to demandjustice.org to get involved and support Demand Justice.

My friend Ken. JOE KENNEDY III, U.S. REPRESENTATIVE.

We are living through a critical moment, David.

Every day, our country sees our values stretched, civic norms strained, and checks and balances undermined. But we can fight back; we have the opportunity to take back the House this November.

That’s why I am so excited to endorse Ken Harbaugh in Ohio’s 7th Congressional District.

Ken is a proven leader and a patriot who is committed to fighting for all Ohioans. As a Navy pilot and the head of a disaster-response organization, Ken has proven time and again that he will protect and serve the American people -- not wealthy corporations, not political funders.

Ken will defend working families, take on the opioid crisis, and fight to ensure that no family ever has to make a choice between paying for health care and putting food on the table.

A blue wave is sweeping the nation, as more working families join the movement to take back the House in 2018.

With gratitude,

Joe

Joe Kennedy III
United States House of Representatives

Thank You. GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE ALEC ROSS.

Dear David,
I wanted to reach out to those who supported my campaign to say thank you. I am so grateful to those who volunteered, contributed, spoke to their friends, hosted events, or voted.
I am not only writing with gratitude today, but also with sadness. There was another mass shooting yesterday in Maryland. Several people have been announced dead or injured in another senseless act of violence.
While the election result did not turn out how I had hoped, I am reminded that I was not running to serve my own ambitions, but to put forward ideas and policies that could re-shape life in Maryland for the better.
Among the ideas that Julie Verratti and I put forward was using technology to make guns safer, including biometric smart grips that would prevent anyone other than the owner from firing. I don’t know yet whether or not yesterday’s shooter used his own legally-purchased gun, but I know that many of the mass shootings and certainly much of the gun crime in my home city of Baltimore are carried out by guns obtained illegally.
The crime and violence that too many young people watch and worry about is a major contributor to their lack of opportunity. If you saw me at a debate or on the campaign trail, I’m sure you heard me say that “talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not.” That was the central theme of our campaign and bridging the gap between talent and opportunity will remain my life’s mission.
Students should be learning to code, not learning to shelter from an active shooter. Whether it’s education, economics, fear of violence, environmental disasters, an unfair criminal justice system, or plain old discrimination, we must make sure that we systematically remove barriers to people being able to make it in tomorrow’s world.
While our campaign has ended, our mission has not. We must all come together and help our nominee, Ben Jealous, so that we cannot only fix the bad, but so we can build the good. We have so much potential and by working together we can realize that potential. The future does not have to be scary.
Julie and I can never fully express how much this journey has meant to us and how much your help along the way is appreciated.
Thank you for helping us run a race we can all be proud of.
My best,
- Alec

The fierce urgency of now. CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE KEN HARBAUGH.

Across the country, we are seeing a trend, David.
Folks are looking around at a nation divided and wondering if there is any way forward.

They see storm clouds and wonder if we will ever see the sun.

In the words of Dr. King: “This is no time for apathy or complacency. This is a time for vigorous and positive action.”

All of us have a choice.

No matter who we voted for in the last election or who we plan to vote for in this next one, it is time to support a new generation of leadership.

It is time to back candidates who are willing to shake things up, break-thru gridlock, roll up their sleeves, and fight for the things we all believe in.

Together, we can fight for the America we know is possible.

And we can do it today.

In service,

Esosa Osa

Did you see New York last night? CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE JOSH WELLE.

Did you see the race results in New York last night? A hungry and humble young mother who was outspent 5-1, won her primary campaign against a 20-year incumbent.

Everyday people are fed up with the same old way of doing things in Washington.

When I was in Afghanistan I never imagined running for congress against the 4th-longest serving Rep in America. But my dedication to service and country over party has taught me I cannot just sit on the sidelines when there's work to be done.

Thank you for all of your support,
Josh

I'm incredibly proud of our campaign. CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE PAT RYAN.

David -- We're still catching our breath after last night, but I wanted to send a quick note to say THANK YOU!

After the polls closed, as we waited for results to come in, I had a moment to step back and reflect on what we've accomplished over the last year. And I'm incredibly proud.

Although we didn't win last night, we delivered a very strong performance in one of the most hotly contested primaries in the country. We tackled tough issues head-on -- from preventing gun violence, to fixing our healthcare system, to combating the opioid crisis. And we were pivotal in driving a massive increase in Democratic turnout across the district (81% higher than last cycle!), setting the foundation for us to win in November.

I'm also incredibly grateful. We couldn't have accomplished all of this without your generous support. It's been humbling to have thousands of people selflessly give their time, energy, advice, and hard-earned dollars to power our campaign. I truly can't thank you enough.

Driving home last night at 3AM after an emotional watch party with our team, I thought about the oath I took fourteen years ago when I graduated from West Point -- to support and defend our Constitution.

I understood then what we all know today -- that this country we love only persists because in times of peril, ordinary Americans stand up to protect it.

And that's exactly what all of us have done through this campaign. It's been an honor and privilege to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with each of you doing the difficult, and critically important, work of protecting our democracy.

It's clear we still have much more work to do. I look forward to working and fighting alongside you as we take back our country.

Best, Pat

P.S. Over the next few days, Rebecca and I are going to take a much-needed break. I look forward to catching up with each of you directly in the coming weeks by phone and/or email. As always, please reach out anytime to me at 845-481-0833.

Courage and Integrity. CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE KEN HARBAUGH.

Ken Harbaugh has fought for this country, David.

As a Navy pilot, he flew missions off the coast of North Korea. As the President of a disaster relief organization, he helped retrain military Veterans to deploy in emergency response teams throughout America and around the world.

Ken has dedicated his life to serving others. And he will fight for our shared Midwestern values: an economy that champions working families, health care that we can all afford, and communities that support our Veterans here at home.

 Sincerely,

U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth

THE HORRIFIC IMPLICATIONS OF REFUSING TO MEET AND EVALUATE THE PRESIDENTS NOMINEE FOR THE U.S. SUPREME COURT. PART 4 of 4.

(THIS IS PART 4 IN A SERIES OF ARTICLES I WROTE CONCERNING
THE CONTROVERSY CREATED BY THE REPUBLICAN PARTIES
TREATMENT OF MERRICK GARLAND, BARACK OBAMAS CHOICE
TO FILL THE VACANCY ON THE U.S. SUPREME COURT.)

WHAT DID WE END UP WITH?

THE DEMOCRATS GIVING UP WITHOUT A FIGHT, AND DONALD TRUMP FILLING 2 SEATS
ON THE SUPREME COURT.

REMEMBER THAT...

n the End, the IMPLICATIONS OF NOT ALLOWING A SENATE HEARING FOR A PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE GOES EVEN DEEPER THAN MANY THINK, BUT I BELIEVE THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IS AWARE OF THIS, AND IS WILLING TO ACCEPT THE CONSEQUENCES.

-  THE SEPARATION OF POWERS, (EXECUTIVE, LEGISLATIVE, JUDICIAL), HAS BEEN USURPED BY THE LEGISLATIVE BRANCH IN THIS CASE. HOWEVER, IN THE FUTURE IT MAY BE THE EXECUTIVE BRANCH REFUSING TO NOMINATE ANYONE AT ALL, UNLESS CERTAIN CONCESSIONS ARE MET.

GIVEN THE COMPLETE DISREGARD FOR CONSTITUTIONAL LAW, YOU ARE LEFT WITH A SYSTEM THAT ENCOURAGES THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY TO BEHAVE IN THE SAME MANNER, IF THE POSITIONS ARE REVERSED. DO YOU REALLY EXPECT ONE PARTY TO BE FAIR AND OPEN IN THE SELECTION PROCESS, IF THE OTHER IS JUST GOING TO DISCARD IT ANYWAY?

-  IN ANY CASE, THE FUTURE OF OUR JUDICIAL SYSTEM WILL BE PUSHED TOWARDS TOTAL CHAOS, WITH RANSOMING THE LEGAL SYSTEM A GIFT LEFT TO FUTURE GENERATIONS. NO LONGER WILL THERE BE A SYSTEM OF CHECKS AND BALANCES, WITH NEITHER THE WHITE HOUSE OR THE SENATE CONTROLLING THE FATE OF OUR SYSTEMS OF LAW.

-  EVEN IF THE REFUSAL TO HOLD A HEARING IS SOMEHOW ALLOWED TO STAND, BUT A DEMOCRAT WINS THE PRESIDENCY, WE COULD STILL BE LEFT WITH THE SAME PROBLEM.  THEY WILL HAVE DONE IT ONCE, WITHOUT SANCTION, WHAT IS TO STOP THE REPUBLICANS FROM DOING IT AGAIN?

AND AGAIN...AND AGAIN...AND AGAIN.

SO THE BIG QUESTION IS: WHY?

THE HORRIFIC IMPLICATIONS OF REFUSING TO MEET AND EVALUATE THE PRESIDENTS NOMINEE FOR THE U.S. SUPREME COURT. PART 3 of 4.

(THIS IS PART 3 IN A SERIES OF ARTICLES I WROTE CONCERNING
THE CONTROVERSY CREATED BY THE REPUBLICAN PARTIES
TREATMENT OF MERRICK GARLAND, BARACK OBAMAS CHOICE
TO FILL THE VACANCY ON THE U.S. SUPREME COURT.)

WHAT DID WE END UP WITH?

THE DEMOCRATS GIVING UP WITHOUT A FIGHT, AND DONALD TRUMP FILLING 2 SEATS
ON THE SUPREME COURT.

REMEMBER THAT...

What is Even More Frightening Than a Few MEGALOMANIACS IN THE REPUBLICAN PARTY REFUSING TO UPHOLD THEIR LEGALLY SWORN OATH TO THE U.S. CONSTITUTION, IS THAT IF IT IS ALLOWED TO STAND WITHOUT A LEGAL CHALLENGE, WE MAY END GOING FROM AN "OLIGARCHY", WITH POLITICAL POWER RESTING IN THE HANDS OF A FEW, TO A "DICTATORSHIP", WITH POWER RESTING IN THE HANDS OF ONE.

Remember, the Nomination of a CANDIDATE FOR A SEAT ON THE SUPREME COURT, AND FOR NUMEROUS OTHER POSITIONS IN GOVERNMENT, RESTS WITH THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN, IN PRACTICAL TERMS?

"...and he shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls, Judges of the Supreme Court, and all other Officers of the United States, whose Appointments are not herein otherwise provided for..."

Do you see it?  If Refusing to Act on a DUTY THAT IS PART OF THE OATH OF OFFICE ACCORDING TO THE CONSTITUTION, IS ALLOWED TO STAND WITHOUT SANCTION OR PENALTY, A PRECEDENT IS SET THAT CANNOT COMPEL ANYONE TO BE LEGALLY OBLIGATED TO ACT IN A SIMILAR MANNER PRESCRIBED BY THE DOCUMENT.

THE PRESIDENT ALONE NOMINATES CANDIDATES, NO ONE ELSE.

What is to Stop a U.S. PRESIDENT FROM DELAYING, OR REFUSING TO NOMINATE, CANDIDATES FOR POSTS THAT ARE VACANT, IF THE SENATE DOES NOT CONTAIN A BODY OF MEMBERS THAT ARE SYMPATHETIC TO APPROVING THOSE NOMINEES THE PRESIDENT FEELS ARE THE "RIGHT CHOICES?"

THE HORRIFIC IMPLICATIONS OF REFUSING TO MEET AND EVALUATE THE PRESIDENTS NOMINEE FOR THE U.S. SUPREME COURT. PART 2 of 4.

REMEMBER THAT...

Usa, Court, Right, Paragraphs, Hammer

WITH PRESIDENT OBAMAS SELECTION OF CHIEF JUDGE MERRICK GARLAND, A HIGHLY QUALIFIED AND VERY CAPABLE CANDIDATE WHO CANNOT REASONABLY BE CONSIDERED TO FALL AT EITHER END OF THE POLITICAL SPECTRUM, THE CLOCK IS NOW TICKING FOR THE U.S. SENATE TO NOW FOLLOW ITS OATH OF OFFICE TO "SUPPORT AND DEFEND THE CONSTITUTION."

CONSIDER THE IMPLICATIONS IF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY STILL REFUSES TO HONOR THEIR DUTY TO THE PEOPLE OF THE U.S.

#1-  IF THIS IS ALLOWED TO STAND, IS THE DOCUMENT NOW A "PICK AND CHOOSE" PIECE OF PAPER, THAT PERMITS A "FOLLOWING ITS DIRECTIONS IF YOU FEEL LIKE IT" MENTALITY, WHERE OBEYING THE GUIDELINES AND INSTRUCTIONS WRITTEN INTO THE BODY OF THE DOCUMENT ARE NO LONGER COMPULSORY?

IN OTHER WORDS-  THESE DIRECTIVES ARE NO LONGER UNIVERSAL, EQUALLY APPLIED TO EVERYONE IN EVERY CASE.  THEY NOW BECOME CONTINGENT UPON THE PERSONAL WHIMS, PREJUDICES, AND SELF-INTERESTS OF ANY POLITICIAN OR ELECTED OFFICIAL.

ONE OF THE STRENGTHS, AND ENDURING LEGACIES OF THE CONSTITUTION IS ITS SYSTEM OF "CHECKS AND BALANCES."  NONE OF THE THREE PARTS OF GOVERNMENT:

EXECUTIVE.

LEGISLATIVE.

JUDICIAL.

...WOULD HAVE UNCHALLENGED AUTHORITY OVER ANY PART OF THE LEGAL SYSTEM. HOWEVER, BY DISREGARDING CONSTITUTIONAL LAW, THE REPUBLICAN PARTY LEADERSHIP IS DESTROYING THE VERY FABRIC OF OUR JUSTICE SYSTEM. THEY WILL HAVE USURPED THE POWER OF THE PRESIDENT, BY REFUSING TO MEET AND CONSIDER HIS NOMINEE.

If this sounds good to you, RESEARCH THE WORD "OLIGARCHY", AND GET
USE TO IT.

If there is one thing that is even Scarier than the U.S. SENATES LEADERSHIP REFUSING TO MEET WITH THE PRESIDENTS NOMINEE, AND NOT EVEN DISCUSSING IT IN COMMITTEE, IS THE POWER THAT IS BEING HANDED TO ONE OR TWO POWER HUNGRY POLITICIANS.

CONSIDER THIS.

NOT ONLY IS THE PRESIDENTS CONSTITUTIONAL OBLIGATION AND DUTY TO SELECT AND NOMINATE A SUCCESSOR TO THE COURT BEING IGNORED, BUT THE REPUBLICAN PARTY WANTS THE FUTURE OF OUR JUDICIAL SYSTEM TO BE PLACED IN THE HANDS OF 1-2 SENATORS.

THE SENATE LEADERSHIP WAS ELECTED TO REPRESENT THEIR HOME STATES. HOWEVER, THIS POLICY ALLOWS THEM TO IGNORE THOSE REPRESENTING THE OTHER 48 STATES, BY DENYING SENATORS FROM BOTH PARTIES THE OPPORTUNITY TO EVALUATE AND VOTE ON THE SELECTED PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE.  THE ONLY OPINION THEY CARE ABOUT, AND WILL ACT ON, IS THEIR OWN.

ANY SENATOR THAT ALLOWS THIS TO GO UNCHALLENGED, HAS BETRAYED THEIR CONSTITUENTS IN FAVOR OF A DICTATORIAL POLICY THAT GRANTS OTHER STATES A POWER THEY HAVE NOT EARNED, AND DO NOT DESERVE. (THROUGH THE ELECTORAL PROCESS).

THIS IS A CLEAR ABUSE OF POWER, AND AN UNCONSTITUTIONAL ATTEMPT TO BYPASS THE ROLE OF THE EXECUTIVE BRANCH IN THE SELECTION PROCESS.

Riding the storm out...JENNIFER BOYSKO, Chair of Run Everywhere.

David,

Let’s be honest: These days, it is easy to become overwhelmed by the negative headlines.
When he isn’t attacking the media for reporting his many failures, the worst U.S. president in history repeatedly blames Democrats for them.

It’s important to remind ourselves that the opposite is usually true. From affordable health care to renewable energy to LGBT rights, Democrats have led the way.

Republicans control the White House, the Supreme Court, and Congress. And what do they have to show for it? A gigantic debt balloon and tax breaks for billionaires.

Meanwhile, Virginia infused the staid old House of Delegates with progressive blood and almost overnight brought affordable health care to 400,000 low income residents.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity,
Jennifer Boysko
Finance Chair, Virginia Democratic House Caucus
Chair of Run Everywhere

Knock-knock. CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE KEN HARBAUGH.

We are out every weekend listening to our neighbors, David. This is what we are hearing:

“I talked to a voter last weekend. She is working three jobs just to keep up with her health care costs. She told me no one had ever come to the door before to listen to what her family needed. She took a Ken Harbaugh flyer and said ‘I’ll see you in November.’” -- Tom, Lorain county

“I talked to a woman who was frustrated by our current representative. ‘Where is he?’ she asked. ‘Why isn’t HE out here listening to us?’ She thanked us for stopping by and promised to learn more about Ken Harbaugh.” -- Lauren, Stark county

“We talked to an undecided voter recently. After our conversation, he said because we knocked on his door and listened to what he had to say, he would help spread the word about Ken Harbaugh. Knocking on doors works.”-- Jared, Ashland county

When we show up where people live, they show up for us on Election Day.

But we are only just getting started. We need to talk to thousands of voters to see this thing through.

In service,

Sara Haas
