I just walked off the Democratic National Committee’s presidential
primary debate stage.
DAVID, there are moments on the campaign trail when I’m acutely
reminded why we need someone from outside Washington in the White House. Tonight,
standing up on that stage talking about the shameful stranglehold that
corporations have on our democracy and the lives of hard-working Americans, was
one of those moments — and a very public reminder that the establishment has
been unwilling or unable to address our most serious challenges.
Too many people feel like their government has tossed them by the
wayside. The sad truth, the truth that I am determined to tell, is that they’re
right.
Our democracy has been victim to a hostile takeover by big,
wealthy corporations that are rigging the system to put their CEOs and
shareholders above real people. Whether it’s Big Pharma profiting off the
opioid crisis while skirting accountability for the harm they’re inflicting or
the National Rifle Association furthering the public health epidemic that is
gun violence — corporations and lobbyists have a stranglehold on our government.
Our country is at a crossroads. We have a lawless president who is
working for corporations and cozying up to dictators — at the expense of the
American people. I know that the only way to take on this corruption is through
the grassroots. That’s why this campaign works to reach people across the
country day in and day out. It’s
hard work, but this moment is too important to take the easy path.
Tom Steyer.
