David, When Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson made ignorant and bigoted comments about transgender women last month, I condemned him and reiterated my call for him to resign. Yesterday, I asked him if we wanted to apologize for his remarks -- in which he referred to transgender women as "big hairy men" -- but he refused. Instead, he responded: "I think this whole concept of political correctness -- you can say this, you can’t say that, you can’t repeat what someone said -- is total foolishness, and it’s going to destroy our nation." Secretary Carson's response is disgraceful. His words perpetuated dangerous stereotypes about transgender Americans, and we deserve a HUD Secretary who recognizes that their words make a difference. So I am once again demanding that Ben Carson resign. We need a HUD secretary who respects the dignity and safety of everyone, regardless of gender or sexuality. Will you join me? And as a former prosecutor, I take lies seriously. He's rolled back the Obama-era “equal-access” rule that protected transgender Americans in HUD programs (including homeless shelters) from discrimination. Now, federally funded shelters can deny transgender people access, further fueling the violence and abuse that takes the lives of many transgender people across our country. Carson has used disgusting language about transgender people to try to justify his discriminatory policies. His refusal to apologize is unacceptable, and we need accountability.
