THE TIME: POST WORLD WAR 2. 1946-
THE PLACE: EUROPE.
THE PROBLEM- THE U.S.S.R HAS CREATED A BUFFER ZONE OF COUNTRIES AROUND ITS BORDERS WHOSE POLITICAL DOCTRINE AND FOREIGN POLICY WAS "MOSCOW INSPIRED AND DIRECTED."
In Truth, it is the "IRON CURTAIN," where Governments in such Countries as POLAND, HUNGARY, ROMANIA, BULGARIA, and EAST GERMANY etc.,were required to be "COMMUNIST," or be constructed to meet the approval of the U.S.S.R.
Essentially, they were part of the U.S.S.R, with no real Self-Rule. (The Map below shows the "SOCIALIST REPUBLICS" that were part of the U.S.S.R, and its "SATELLITE COUNTRIES" with Puppet Governments controlled by MOSCOW.)
The problem was that the Countries located outside the "IRON CURTAIN," especially Mainland Western Europe, feared SOVIET AGGRESSION in the form of MILITARY INVASION, that would force them to become part of the SOVIET BLOC.
The UNITED STATES came to realize the enormous ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL INVESTMENT it had in these threatened Countries, and it could not allow the U.S.S.R to have an open invitation to take over these "FRIENDLY NATIONS."
However, the ARMED FORCES of these Nations could not withstand a determined SOVIET INVASION. (Remember, some of those Countries suffered grievous losses during WW2, and did not have THE MANPOWER OR ECONOMIC RESOURCES available to the U.S. and the U.S.S.R)
SO, IN 1949 NATO WAS BORN. An ALLIANCE between the U.S., and its POST WAR ALLIES. (THE FOLLOWING IS TAKEN FROM THE NATO WEBSITE)
...the North Atlantic Treaty was signed on 4 April, 1949. In the Treaty’s renowned Article 5, the new Allies agreed “an armed attack against one or more of them… shall be considered an attack against them all” and that following such an attack, each Ally would take “such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force” in response...
DO YOU SEE WHERE I'M GOING WITH THIS,VLAD AND DONALD?
