AMERICAN PHILOSOPHICAL ASSOCIATION- Reminder: Pacific Division paper submissions close September 4.
Trump's very bad week. JENNIFER BOYSKO, RUN EVERYWHERE.
David,
Last week, Donald Trump had a BAD week. And how did he handle it? Poorly, of course.
Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen pled guilty to eight felony charges related to fraud and said under oath that he committed crimes at the “direction of” Trump. The Manhattan district attorney's office is looking at whether or not the Trump Organization’s payments or reimbursements to Cohen — the ones intended to silence porn star Stormy Daniels and Playboy model Karen McDougal — violated any campaign finance laws.
In addition, a couple of Trump's cohorts were granted immunity in the investigation, allowing them to speak freely without legal repercussions: Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg and National Enquirer publisher David Pecker. To top it off, Trump’s former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, was convicted of eight felonies related to fraud. Then, Trump continued his feud with Senator John McCain after he passed away on Saturday by, at first, refusing to put the White House flag at half-staff to honor the war hero and former presidential candidate.
How did Trump react overall? By tweeting, mostly. He trashed Cohen and called Manafort “brave.” More importantly, how did the Republicans in Congress react? By doing nothing. They’re too busy putting party over country.
We have to do our part this November by voting out the GOP.
We can do this together,
Jennifer Boysko,
Finance Chair, Virginia Democratic House Caucus

Barbara Comstock has failed us... CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE JENNIFER WEXTON.
Barbara Comstock has failed us. She has failed us by remaining silent and not standing up for us when it matters most. Gabby Giffords got it right (watch her new ad here) when she said that what makes America great is that we recognize that no problem is to big to solve. Barbara Comstock has taken thousands from the NRA, this weekend we can get us one step closer to taking back Congress by knocking thousands of doors for Jennifer Wexton!
See below for all the opportunities to help us #TakeItBack and show Barbara Comstock that #ChangeIsComing to #VA10

THE WORLD OF CRYPTOZOOLOGY. PT 1.
They would be hard to miss, especially on the Large Cable Networks. T.V. Shows based on the Search for Earths most Legendary and Elusive Creatures.
It could be BIGFOOT, YETI, LOCH NESS MONSTER, MOKELE-
MBEMBE, or dozens of others.
They can be found on virtually every Continent, and in all the Seven Seas.
It could be the Desert, Jungle, Forest, Mountains etc., no Habitat is lacking their presence.
Stories about their Existence, Manner of Living, and Cultural Influence are found in the History of many different Populations and Societies. They are part of Religious Belief Systems, and are often claimed to have "Supernatural" and "God Like" Powers.
Many famous people have believed in, and searched for, Physical Evidence of their existence. Time and Money were often considered to be Unimportant, it was a labor of love. Lack of success, never seemed to discourage many searchers. Expeditions were mounted and carried out, regardless of past results.
Yet, CRYPTOZOOLOGY, (The study of such Creatures), is considered to be Pseudoscience. The Academic World dismisses this subject, and considers it to be Irrelevant when discussing Nature, and the Animals that are part of it.
Why is this? Because Cryptozoologists make the same mistakes that are found in other Fringe and Unverified Theories.

The APA’s Department Advocacy Toolkit is now available.
Dear DAVID, The American Philosophical Association is pleased to announce that our Department Advocacy Toolkit is now available. The toolkit was prepared by the committee on the status and future of the profession, under the leadership of chair Sally Scholz, in response to increasing cuts to humanities programs nationwide—philosophy programs in particular. Motivated by our belief in the value of philosophy, the Department Advocacy Toolkit is intended to provide strategies that may be useful to programs that are at risk, programs hoping to insulate themselves against future risk, and programs aiming to strengthen and/or expand. The ideas contained in the toolkit have been selected from across different types of institutions and departments. It is up to the faculty members within a department to decide which ideas will be most effective at their institution and in their department. Download the Department Advocacy Toolkit We've also created fliers to go along with the toolkit to help departments with outreach to prospective students and other members of their campus communities. These fliers can also be found at the above link. We hope you will find the Department Advocacy Toolkit to be a helpful resource and encourage you to share it with your colleagues. All the best, Amy E. Ferrer Executive Director |

WOMENS EQUALITY DAY. CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE MAURA SULLIVAN.
|
Celebrating Women’s Equality Day. Jennifer Boysko, Finance Chair, Virginia Democratic House Caucus
David,
Yesterday we celebrated Women’s Equality Day by honoring all women and their fight for equality. Women need equality in the workforce and in all areas of their lives. We know that when women suffer, children suffer.
In this country, women earn only about 80% of the average man’s pay. Black women get 65% less and Hispanic women, on average, only make 59 cents to each dollar white males make. The Trump administration is doing everything in its power to expand the wage gap by rolling back Obama’s equal pay rule and making it easier for companies to hide how much they pay women and people of color.
It’s crazy that women are still fighting for the same pay as their male counterparts. That’s why we have to keep challenging the status quo.

MCCAIN. CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE KEN HARBAUGH.
Yesterday, we lost John McCain.
He was a US Senator and a former presidential candidate.
But I will always remember him as Captain McCain, fellow naval aviator. I still recall the photos of him on the wall of my favorite bar in flight school. I imagine the gold wings he wore then on his chest, bearing him now on his final journey.
I recall, too, the example he set for us younger pilots as we underwent POW interrogation training. We learned how John McCain, though badly injured, refused an early release until his fellow prisoners could come home. We all memorized the Code of Conduct, but John McCain’s example made the words real.
If I become a prisoner of war, I will keep faith with my fellow prisoners . . .I will never forget that I am an American, fighting for freedom, responsible for my actions, and dedicated to the principles which made my country free.
Over the coming days, we will read the eulogies, the remembrances, the tributes to a life of heroism and service.
But let us also consider Captain John McCain’s final plea to his fellow Americans:
Before I leave, I’d like to see our politics begin to return to the purposes and practices that distinguish our history from the history of other nations. I would like to see us recover our sense that we are more alike than different. We are citizens of a republic made of shared ideals forged in a new world to replace the tribal enmities that tormented the old one. Even in times of political turmoil such as these, we share that awesome heritage and the responsibility to embrace it.
Rest easy, Shipmate.
We have the watch.

Ken

SIGN NOW TO SAY NO! TO GHOST GUNS. VIRGINIA ATTORNEY GENERAL MARK HERRING.
David,
This is scary stuff. Our weak gun laws already make it too easy for domestic abusers and dangerous criminals to get their hands on guns.
And now, the Trump administration is moving forward with a plan to make undetectable, untraceable “ghost guns” more widely available.
President Trump has shown time and again that he is completely beholden to extremists in the gun lobby, but this is a new low.
I’m working hard each and every day for the commonsense gun safety laws we need – like universal background checks, a new assault weapons ban and a ban on bump stocks and high-capacity magazines.
But instead of working with us to save lives, the Trump administration and their allies in the gun lobby are making our work even harder.
My colleagues and I have sued to block this plan, but we also need to hear from you.

Thanks for stepping up,
Mark.
WE'RE ON TV! GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE MOLLY KELLY.
David,
We just launched our first TV ad! Thanks to your support, we are able to spread our message of building a New Hampshire where everyone has the opportunity to succeed across the Granite State.
The ad, “Table,” features Molly’s life story from when she was a single mom who raised three small children while working her way through college and law school before becoming a financial advisor and New Hampshire state senator.
The ad highlights that Molly will open opportunities for everyone in New Hampshire and that she is refusing corporate contributions to her campaign. Molly is the only candidate for governor who, from day one of her campaign, has not accepted contributions from corporations or from fossil fuel executives.
We’re relying on grassroots supporters like you to help us reach more Granite Staters. With less than three weeks from primary day, we need your help to spread our message by sharing this ad on Facebook and Twitter.
Thank you,
Team Molly.

SENIORS... U.S. REPRESENTATIVE DAVID CICILLINE.
August 23, 2018 | |||||||||||||||
Dear David, After a lifetime of hard work, Rhode Island seniors deserve to live their retirement years with dignity and economic security. That won’t happen if Republicans get their way. On Monday, I spoke with residents at Rumford Towers where I released a new report prepared by the House Democratic Caucus Seniors Task Force on the long history of Republican attacks on seniors’ earned benefits. The record is clear - Republicans want to bring us back to the days when only some folks could afford to retire and everyone else was on their own. Democrats know we can do better and that’s why we continue fighting For The People, not the special interests, and making sure that all seniors are able to live their retirement years with dignity and without worry that their basic needs are met here in Rhode Island and across our country. Last year, I worked with my colleagues to craft a plan that lowered the cost of prescription drugs by allowing Medicare to negotiate with the pharmaceutical industry, cracking down on price gouging, and requiring companies to release data to justify price increases. On Monday, I also outlined the Protecting and Preserving Social Security Act, a bill that I am co-sponsoring which will extend the solvency of Social Security by decades and provide seniors with a stronger cost-of-living adjustment. When Democrats take the majority this November, we will keep doing everything we can For The People to bring down the cost of prescription drugs and strengthen Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. NOT A WITCH HUNT On Tuesday, President Trump’s former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort and personal attorney, Michael Cohen were each found guilty of serious offenses against the United States. They join President Trump’s former national security adviser, his deputy campaign chairman, and his foreign policy adviser, each of whom was also convicted of serious crimes. Not since Richard Nixon have we seen a presidential administration this embroiled in corruption. Most shocking of all, Cohen confirmed under oath that the President of the United States directed him to engage in criminal activity during the presidential campaign. In light of these facts, President Trump needs to come clean and sit down for an interview with Special Counsel Robert Mueller immediately. On another front, and with complete disregard of duty, the Republicans who control Congress have refused to exercise their constitutional oversight responsibility and have acted more like President Trump’s defense attorneys. It is crucial that Speaker Ryan call the House back into session to pass legislation that protects the Special Counsel and ensures that he can complete his investigation. While Democrats are united in this effort, we remain in the minority. Our Republican colleagues need to finally do their job and join us in making clear that Special Counsel Mueller will be permitted to finish his work free from political interference. It’s time to put our country first. GROUNDBREAKING AT CENTRAL FALLS I am thrilled to have joined Mayor Diossa, Senator Whitehouse, and state and local elected officials earlier this week for Monday’s groundbreaking in the great city of Central Falls. This event marked a critical milestone in the transformation of a vacant lot into new residential units that will consist of single and two-bedroom apartments. Under the leadership of Mayor Diossa, Central Falls has gone through an incredible transformation these past few years. The city, once under financial distress and forced to file for bankruptcy, has turned a corner thanks to its leaders in government and the community. Investing in our communities and making sure there are clean and safe places to live with good schools and reliable infrastructure is so important and exactly what we need to be doing to move our cities, state, and country forward. I’m proud to have been there on Monday and look forward to seeing more to come from this comeback city. NATIONAL HEALTH CENTER WEEK As part of National Health Center Week, I was honored to celebrate Americas’ Health Centers and receive the Health Center Superhero Award from the Rhode Island Health Center Association this past Monday. Community health centers are a vital part of our healthcare network by providing high-quality, affordable health care to tens of millions of Americans each year, including hundreds of thousands of Rhode Islanders. Most importantly, they provide critical access to our most vulnerable Americans. As healthcare and the cost of prescription drugs skyrocket we need to remain committed to making sure that everyone is able to access healthcare, regardless of income. It was my honor to participate in this event, as well as recognize health centers and the people that work in them for the great services they provide to their communities. As always, if you or someone you know has any questions or concerns, please call my office at 729-5600 or send me an email at David.Cicilline@mail.house.gov. You can also click here to follow my work on Twitter. Warm Regards, David Cicilline Member of Congress |

Turn up turnout for Democrats...CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE STEVE SEVIGNY, MD.
Dear David,
We are down to the final days. We have ads on TV and radio. We are making thousands of calls to voters every day. I'm on the phone dialing away, talking to every voter I can. It's intense. It's an emotional roller coaster. I love hearing from voters what matters to them in this important election.
We are fighting for every vote for our campaign - and at the same time trying to drive up Democratic turnout for all the down ballot races that could be decided outright on August 28th.
As a first time candidate, there have been some eye opening lessons. One thing that has struck me is how many of the best funded campaigns fail to support the local party organizations and down ballot campaigns.
To win in November we need a strong team - candidates at every level fighting for our values. That's how we flip red seats to seats that will hold this corrupt administration accountable and pass laws reflecting our values.
Those campaigns need the resources and the know-how to over perform. We support the local Democratic organizations and do what we can to assist the great candidates we have running down ballot.
We are working now to earn every vote - and to get every Democrat out to vote in this important primary.
In solidarity,
Steve,

Big deal (Planned Parenthood). GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE MOLLY KELLY.
Dear David,
Throughout my life, I’ve championed women’s reproductive rights.
So when news broke yesterday that Planned Parenthood New Hampshire Action Fund endorsed me for governor of New Hampshire, it was a big deal.
Planned Parenthood is on the front lines for women in New Hampshire and across our country to make sure everyone has access to the health care they need – from cancer screenings to LGBTQ services to reproductive health care.
I share their commitment, and I’m proud and honored to have their endorsement.
Now is a critical time for Planned Parenthood and women’s reproductive rights.
It’s been a generation since we’ve faced this big of a threat to reproductive rights.
With Brett Kavanaugh, Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, on the cusp of a lifetime appointment, we’re facing unprecedented attacks on a woman’s right to access a safe, legal abortion. And Chris Sununu is supporting Kavanaugh anyway.
As governor, I won’t allow women’s reproductive rights to go backward. Every woman, regardless of income, will continue to have access to a safe, legal abortion as long as I’m in the corner office.
Now I need your help to unseat a Republican governor to protect reproductive rights for Granite Staters.
Thank you,
Molly Kelly
Urgent: Breitbart/NRA attack. CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE MAURA SULLIVAN.
Maura’s latest TV ad has gained serious attention. NRA TV and Breitbart have some choice words for her stance on gun reform. Michael Graham and former U.S. Marine, Jessie Jane Duff, took the opportunity to mock Maura’s service and spread misinformation about assault weapons and common-sense gun legislation in the United States.
While Breitbart and the NRA are calling Maura an “oathbreaker” and claiming that true Marines can’t believe in common-sense gun legislation, Maura understands that service to the United States and the Constitution does not stop with one’s active military service. The duty to protect American lives means bringing people together to find common ground on legislation that will keep our kids and community safe.
Supporters of the NRA are going to do all they can to ignore thoughtful, bipartisan discussion on gun reform. They will continue with the low blows and petty attacks. The only way we can rise above their reckless rhetoric is by continuing to fundraise, knock on doors, and win this critical swing district,
Your support means everything,
Team Maura
Is one debate too much to ask for? CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE KEN HARBAUGH.
You know it’s a bad sign when voters can’t remember how long it’s been since they’ve seen their elected representative.
Way back in April, in a rare public appearance, Bob Gibbs was asked if he would participate in a single debate before the general election.
He brushed the question off as “overblown.” He said, “I’ll decide that later.” Eventually.
Eventually? What could possibly be more important than participating in democracy? What is preventing him from being a representative and doing his job?
Well, we found out what’s been keeping him so ‘busy.’ More than 75% of Gibbs’ campaign is funded by corporate and political PACs. When he’s not voting to cut Medicare and strip health care from Ohio families, he’s doing the bidding of PACs and promoting their interests over ours.
America isn’t an aristocracy and it’s not a monarchy. Our elected officials are accountable to the PEOPLE. That’s why I’m calling on Gibbs to agree to an in-person, public debate with me once and for all.
In service,
Ken

Tough women make history. CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE MAURA SULLIVAN.
The 19th amendment marked a historic win in the battle for women’s rights in this country. But Maura knows that the fight for equality is far from over - women’s rights are under attack, health care is in jeopardy, and women still earn less than men for equal work. Plus, women make up only 20% of Congress.
Let’s face it - the behavior and actions of Donald Trump and the GOP are an attack on women and should not be tolerated. The 19th amendment was the result of hard work by tough women. Maura has fought for women’s rights in Washington before, and she’ll do it again - by standing up to Donald Trump and the GOP and advocating for what is right.
The fight for women's rights isn’t over. This is the year to ensure women’s voices are heard in Congress.
Thank you,
Whitney Larsen
