As you can see, The FALLACY OF THE EXCLUDED MIDDLE, can be used to Drive an Unwary Target into a corner. To those Familiar with it, it is apparent and easily Refuted.
HOW?
In this example, Person #2 is USING THE LACKOF EVIDENCE FOR ALIEN VISITATION, AS EVIDENCE THAT THERE IS A COVER UP.
This is a common Tactic for those who cannot back up their Conclusions with Real and Tangible Evidence. To explain this, an Assertion is made that one of the POWERS THAT BE, Hides or Destroys anything that might support a Conclusion that they don't want to be Discovered.
(In this case, "Powers that Be" is Government. However, in other Cases, it might mean Institutions such as ACADEMIA, RELIGION, POLICE., ETC.)
However, THE ASSERTION OF FACTUAL DATA ACTUALLY EXISTING IS MEANINGLESS, IF THERE IS NOTHING ELSE TO SUPPORT SUCH A STATEMENT. When this is pointed out, those claiming Cover- Up, sometimes turn to an EMOTIONAL PLEA FOR ACCEPTANCE. Prominent among these, is the "US VERSUS THEM" CATEGORY.
THE "YOU AND ME AGAINST THE WORLD" Argument best exemplifies this Invalid Line of Reasoning.
Here is a FORM it might take, using the Alien Visitation example;
GOVERNMENT IS A CORRUPT INSTITUTION.
CORRUPT INSTITUTIONS LIE AND DECEIVE.
THEREFORE, GOVERNMENT IS LYING AND
DECEIVING US ABOUT ALIEN VISITATION.
Whether or not Government is Corrupt, is a separate issue from there being evidence of Alien Visitation that is being Destroyed or Withheld. One is not Dependent on the other.
