AMERICAN PHILOSOPHICAL ASSOCIATION. The APA's Good Practices Guide is now available.

Dear DAVID,

The APA is pleased to announce that our Good Practices Guide is now available. The guide was prepared by the task force on a best practices guide, under the leadership of its chair, Peter Railton, with input from multiple committees and individuals, including APA members during a public open-comment period on the draft guide and feedback sessions held at the 2018 APA divisional meetings.

The Good Practices Guide is intended to serve as a set of recommendations to help philosophers create and maintain an academic community based on mutual respect, fairness, inclusivity, and a commitment to scholarship and learning.

Our hope is that the guide will continue to evolve over time to keep up with the changing needs of the profession. I encourage you to submit comments and suggestions on this guide via the form on the APA website.

We hope you will find the Good Practices Guide to be a helpful resource and encourage you to share and discuss it with your colleagues and students.

All the best,

Amy E. Ferrer
Executive Director

Philosophy, Greece, Socrates, Statue

If there is one thing that has always puzzled me, given the degree of importance they usually play in justifying specific actions, (or inactions), when dealing with matters of a Political Nature, it is the blind acceptance of the Truth of Assertions made in categories such as...

- STATISTICS.
  (INCLUDES PERCENTAGES, NUMBERS AND FIGURES,
FINANCES, AND, OF COURSE, VOTE TOTALS/ELECTION RESULTS)

- PROPER DOCUMENTATION.

- LAW. (WORDING AND INTERPRETATION).

- AUTOMATIC ASSUMPTION THAT AN AUTHORITY
FIGURE CANNOT BE QUESTIONED OR DOUBTED.

...that are not properly checked for TRUTH AND VALIDITY,
EVEN BY THOSE WHO ARE AFFECTED NEGATIVELY.
   THIS INCLUDES AGENTS, REPRESENTATIVES, ELECTED
OFFICIALS etc; WHO HAVE A LEGAL/MORAL DUTY TO ACT
   ON BEHALF OF OTHERS.

There is no excuse for any INDIVIDUAL OR GROUP TO ACCEPT ANY
CONCLUSIONS IN THE ABOVE CATEGORIES WITHOUT CLEAR
AND UNDERSTANDABLE REASONS THAT CAN BE CHECKED AND
PROPERLY VERIFIED, AND WITH THE PREMISES AND CONCLUSIONS
 FORMING A LOGICALLY VALID ARGUMENT.

Racism, Intolerance, Prejudice

The Selfish, Self - Centered, and Dishonest are elected to office all the time. Guess what? Some of the voters who supported them also have these qualities. Stop being hesitant in confronting individuals and groups who might be offended if you question their Veracity or Motives.

If your reasoning is sound , and meant to uncover truth, let them complain. In the end, the General Public will realize that the indignant behavior is meant to direct suspicion away from evidence and facts that exposes their Position/Opinion as Irrational and/or Invalid, and possibly Unconstitutional.

REMEMBER THIS,
"Hard Core Trump Supporters go far beyond the Republican Party "Revolution." To them, Hate, Prejudice, Xenophobia, Racism, and Religious Zealotry are not Abstract Concepts to be studied, but Tangible and Useful Tactics to Influence Fanatics of every Stripe, and scare more Rational Potential Voters..."
FROM MY ARTICLE: MESSAGE TO ALL PROGRESSIVES: DON'T YOU SEE IT, EVEN NOW? PART 2. 10/3/2016

THIS IS WHAT YOU'RE AFRAID OF?  DONALD TRUMP AND HIS SUPPORTERS ARE NOT VICTIMS, THEY ARE THE VICTIMIZERS.

Taking action to stop the opioid epidemic. BOB FERGUSON.

David -- Opioids have devastated communities across our state and the country, which is why combating this epidemic has been one of my top priorities as Washington’s attorney general.

Opioid manufacturers have deceptively marketed their products and lied to doctors about the risks of addiction. Distributors have flooded Washington with pills and continually failed to report and suspend suspicious orders. Sales of opioids peaked in Washington in 2011 when more than 112 million daily doses were dispensed throughout the state. That’s enough for a 16-day supply for every woman, man, and child in Washington. As a result of their massive deception, countless Washingtonians have died.

I’ve held summits and led bipartisan coalitions of other AGs to address this crisis. I’ve sued one of the nation’s biggest opioid manufacturers and the largest distributors of opioids into Washington, and I’ll continue fighting to hold them accountable. I’ve led other attorneys general in recommending legislative fixes that have been signed into law. I proudly worked with Senator Maria Cantwell who helped lead the effort to pass the Opioid Crisis Response Act. But more needs to be done.

We need to provide effective treatment and support for those affected by this crisis and address the systemic failures that created this epidemic. This is a national problem that requires national solutions.

Thank you,
Bob
