I offered this brief response:
It is your response to the situation, Given Time, Place, and Circumstance that is measured Legally, Ethically, and Emotionally. Insulting someone and Physically committing Battery call for two different type of responses. One immediate and measured by Self-Preservation, while the other may allow for a degree of Intellectual Reflection and a limited time for a proper response. However, that again can only be judged rationally GIVEN TIME, PLACE, AND CIRCUMSTANCE.
