West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin is out with a new op-ed in his state's local newspaper explaining his opposition to his own party’s voting rights bill: the pro-democracy For the People Act.
Without his support, Democrats in Congress are powerless to block attacks on voting rights in Texas and other states with Republican governments.
His opposition is directly empowering Texas Republicans who are pushing voter suppression bills in the legislature.
This isn’t the first time the filibuster has been used to defend Jim Crow in Texas and other Southern states. Opponents of civil rights have long wielded it as a weapon to protect white supremacy.
Now Joe Manchin is joining this shameful tradition.
We need to send a message to Joe Manchin that it’s time to fight back: Will you add your name to tell him that there’s nothing bipartisan or unifying about allowing the Texas GOP to take away voting rights from Black and Brown people?
Manchin claims that he’s opposing voting rights in the name of bipartisanship. But the truth is that the Republican Party wants to roll back voting rights.
Manchin’s obsession with “bipartisanship” with the Republican party is tantamount to supporting their assault on democracy in Texas and across the country.
We cannot and must not compromise when it comes to our right to vote.
