US national news ·The US Department of Justice is investigating whether former President Donald Trump violated the Espionage Act, according to reports

  
FBI agents removed 11 sets of classified documents from former President Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, including some marked top secret and meant to only be available in special government facilities.


The US Justice Department is investigating whether former President Donald Trump violated the Espionage Act, which prohibits retaining national security information that could harm the United States or aid a foreign adversary, The New York Times, Politico and The Guardian report. Per an FBI warrant obtained by the outlets, Trump is also being investigated for violating additional statutes relating to obstruction of justice and destroying federal government records. Conviction under these statutes can result in imprisonment or fines.

The US Department of Justice announced on Thursday that it is moving forward with unsealing the search warrant and itemized receipt of what was taken from former president Donald Trump’s residence at his Mar-a-Largo Club in Palm Beach, Florida, during an FBI search of the property earlier this week. It was Attorney General Merrick Garland’s first public statement since Monday’s search and the first public acknowledgment that the department is actively investigating Trump’s handling of classified presidential records.
