District Wins in Invest in America Act. U.S. REP. JAKE AUCHINCLOSS.

Last week, the House of Representatives passed the INVEST In America Act , a transformational surface transportation reauthorization bill that will create well-paying jobs and bring Massachusetts’ infrastructure into the modern era. It will fix roads and bridges, upgrade transit, and invest in clean energy. In addition to an amendment that empowers local governments to improve transit, six key district provisions I advocated for were included in the bill: Beacon Street Bridle Path — $2,000,000 in funding to restore Frederick Law and John Charles Olmsted’s original design for a two-way multiuse path improving safety and accessibility for pedestrians, wheelchairs, cyclists, and micro-mobility users along the 2.3-mile length of Beacon Street. Safety Improvements at Intersection of Walnut Street & Route 140 (Foxborough) — $2,000,000 in funding to support the necessary signalization of this intersection to complete the development of nearly 250 affordable housing units. West Street and Route 27 Intersection Improvements (Medfield) — $1,440,000 in funding to enable progression from design to construction of this high crash location to support vehicular and pedestrian safety and the construction of 72 new housing units. Christina Street Rail Bridge (Needham & Newton) — $1,600,000 in funding to support the reconstruction of an accessible, shared-use bicycle and pedestrian connection between Newton and Needham, with recreational value for residents and off-road connections for employees accessing nearby businesses. Regional Bike and Walking Trail (North Attleborough Branch) — $1,500,000 in funding to create a 2.5 mile off-road, multi-use pathway connecting to a regional pathway network planned in adjacent communities, the town’s WWI Park, the Industrial Park, and community schools. Taunton River Trail — $4,800,000 in funding to construct a segment of a planned 22+ mile continuous network of off-road and on-road bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure to connect Taunton, Dighton, and Somerset along the Taunton River.  Additionally, the Water Quality Protection and Job Creation Act of 2021 passed with the INVEST Act. This clean water legislation provides over $40 billion to the Clean Water State Revolving Fund, which is the primary source of federal funding to deliver clean water to support communities with long standing combined sewer outflow challenges like Fall River. From fixing highways to supporting affordable housing, this infrastructure bill will deliver results for every American, all while creating jobs right here at home to get it done. As we work with this Administration on a build back better policy, Massachusetts can lead the way. I launched ServeNY this year with a mission to support candidates driven by service to their communities—from frontline healthcare workers to military veterans—who are running for local office across New York State. Our first round of endorsements included exceptional candidates with strong records of service that spanned the entire state.

SOME THOUGHTS. U.S. REP. ADAM SCHIFF.

Six months ago today, I was on the floor of the House of Representatives when we first got reports that a mob had surrounded the Capitol.

Many of us didn’t think much of it at the time. Instead, we were focusing on our work: certifying the election and pushing back against the abundance of false arguments propping up Trump’s Big Lie.

How wrong we were.

As the minutes passed, we realized it was serious. When we were told to get out the gas masks under our seats, we knew the situation was out of control. And when we were evacuated past the mob, we realized how close we came to catastrophe.

As we were being led by the Capitol Police out the back entrance, a gunshot rang out. Walking through the hallways under the building, one of my colleagues carried a wooden stake to protect himself. Our leaders were led to secret shelters. It was unlike anything I’d ever experienced.

It was the greatest domestic threat to our democracy since the Civil War. A group of violent insurrectionists trying to overthrow the election. And before Trump, I never would have believed something like this could happen in our nation. Not here. Not in America.

Since that day, too many in the country have tried to whitewash what happened. People have tried to excuse the violent mob, forget the white nationalists lurking in our hallways, and chalk it up as a normal tourist visit.

But we all saw the tape. The mob’s intent was clear — it was to overturn the election and overthrow a democratically elected government. It can never be allowed to happen again.

For months, Democrats have tried to get Republicans to do the right thing. To investigate how our democracy became so imperiled and to set up a bipartisan commission. We agreed to all of their demands. They still said no.

That’s why just last week, Speaker Pelosi acted — appointing a select committee of both Democrats and Republicans to investigate what happened in the lead up to that tragic day, and what we can do to prevent it from ever happening again.

I was honored to receive a call from the Speaker asking me to serve. It’s a solemn responsibility, and I don’t take it lightly.

There are a lot of questions to answer: What signs were missed before the attack on our temple of democracy? Who planned the assault? What did elected leaders, including the former president, do to incite or defend against the insurrection? And what do we need to do to protect our nation, and democracy, in the future?

It’s unfortunate, but I know that attacks on the process of getting to the truth will come. And they have already begun. Many Republicans in Congress are hellbent on forgiving and forgetting the events of that infamous day. They will try to distract their base. Muddle the truth. And try to paint this as a political commission, rather than what it really is – a committee to protect our democracy.

Some will do all they can to block this critical work.

We can’t let them. We won’t let them. This is an investigation to find out the full truth. The fight to protect and uphold our democracy is far too important to let anyone stop us.

It is a mistake for Progressives to think that those who make up the Most Conservative Elements of the "NEW REPUBLICAN PARTY" ARE ALL CUT FROM THE SAME CLOTH. WHILE THEY MAY VOTE AS A BLOC,THE PRIMARY MOTIVATION DIFFERS FROM GROUP TO GROUP.

While They are usually Packaged Together, ULTRA CONSERVATIVE POLITICIANS HAVE REALIZED THAT FINDING THE ONE KEY ISSUE THAT DRIVES CERTAIN GROUPS OF VOTERS TO THE POLLS, OFTEN WILL TURN THEM INTO LOYAL ALLIES, who will support an agenda full of Issues They may care little about.

It could be GUN CONTROL, SAME- SEX MARRIAGE, GOVERNMENT SPENDING, SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE, IMMIGRATION LAWS, REPRODUCTIVE MEDICINE etc. THE STRATEGY IS TO PUT FORTH AN UNCOMPROMISING, RIGID, AND VITRIOLIC POINT OF VIEW ON A PARTICULAR ISSUE, APPEALING TO THE BASER ELEMENTS OF HUMAN NATURE.

THE REASON: TO LEARN OF THE ONE ISSUE THAT EACH SECTION OF INDIVIDUAL VOTERS MOST IDENTIFIES WITH, AND MANIPULATE IT TO THEIR ADVANTAGE.

IT'S A TACTIC THAT REQUIRES NO INTELLECTUAL EFFORT ON THE PART OF THE LISTENER. THERE IS NO NEED TO UNDERSTAND, OR EVEN CARE ABOUT THE OPPOSITIONS POINT OF VIEW. IT PLAYS ON RAW EMOTION, WITHOUT THE NEED FOR CONTEMPLATION OR REFLECTION.

THE INDIVIDUAL IS ENCOURAGED NOT TO THINK ABOUT AN INTELLECTUAL JUSTIFICATION FOR THE OPINION THEY ARE SUPPORTING, BUT TO REACT TO THE WORDS OF THE AUTHOR AND\OR SPEAKER, AND ACCEPTING THE MESSAGE AS TRUE, AND WORTHY OF SUPPORT.  THIS, IN TURN, ENCOURAGES AGREEMENT WITH OTHER OPINIONS THAT ARE EXPRESSED THE SAME WAY.
