Eastern Division Elections

This year, the Eastern Division will elect a vice president, two members at large of the executive committee, and two members of the nominating committee. Before voting, learn more about the candidates by reading their candidate bios.

Member at Large of the APA Board of Officers

Following an open nomination process and deliberations by the nominating committee, three candidates now stand for election for the position of member at large of the APA’s board of officers. The person elected will serve a three-year term beginning July 1, 2020.

The three candidates for election were given the opportunity to submit candidate statements, photos, and other ballot information. Members are encouraged to review the candidate information prior to voting.

Bylaws Amendment

At its meeting in November 2019, the APA board of officers proposed an amendment to the association bylaws to create a seat on the board for the chair of the APA Graduate Student Council. To be adopted, an amendment must be approved by a majority of those voting in each of the divisions. Members are encouraged to review the proposed bylaws amendment prior to voting.

Vote
 now

Only full (regular and emeritus) members of the association affiliated with one of the three divisions are eligible to vote, and you must be signed in to the APA website to access the ballot link. Voting will remain open for 30 days, closing on May 21.

Once submitted, your votes are final. You will not be able to return to your ballot and change your votes, so please consider your choices carefully before submitting.

Thank you for taking the time to vote!

All the best,

Join Seth and Lauren Underwood tomorrow on Facebook Live. SETH MOULTON.

David,
Tomorrow at 3:30 pm ET, Representative Lauren Underwood (IL-14) will join Seth on Facebook Live to share her perspective on the COVID-19 crisis as a registered nurse and former Department of Health and Human Services senior official.
In these stressful and confusing times, it’s more important than ever to hear from leaders we can trust. The American people are looking to their elected leaders for guidance, as lapses in our public health infrastructure have become a threat to our national security and to the fundamentals of our economy and society.
In 2017, Seth started Serve America PAC with the goal of electing more service-driven leaders like Rep. Underwood, who was part of our first class of endorsees last cycle. We look forward to hearing from her tomorrow and hope you’ll be able to join us.
When: Tuesday, April 21, 2020 at 3:30 pm ET
How to join: Tune into https://www.facebook.com/SethMoulton/live at the time of the event.
Thank you,
Team Moulton

NOT ENOUGH VOLUNTEERS. ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ

Race, class, and other inequalities that were growing before COVID-19 are now determining who lives and who dies. This moment demands that we put working-class people first – but we need your help.
Our volunteers are hitting the phones, calling to check-in on our neighbors. Right now, we simply don’t have enough volunteers to call everyone.we could really use you on the AOC volunteer squad. Can you give 1-2 hours of your time to call people in NY-14, the hardest hit district in America?
Upcoming events:
You can also see all events here.
No one should die from COVID-19 because they’re afraid of the costs of health care. No one should go hungry because the restaurant they work at closed.
We can move through this. We can unite against injustice. We can strengthen our communities. But we need to come together.
We need as many people as possible on our side. Can we count on you,
– Team AOC
P.S. If you can’t volunteer, please contribute to our food pantries instead – and watch the video about our effort to help food pantries too.

LOGIC- IT'S NOT JUST FOR VULCANS, AND VIEWERS OF "THE BIG BANG THEORY." #1.

(ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON 3/26/2014)

Graffiti, Spock, Leonard Nimoy

The subject matter will focus on current issues, and how many of those who give opinions and commentary in Public Forums often violate the basic rules of Logic and Critical Thinking.  Often this is done so casually, that it implies a disdain for proper intellectual discourse.

All examples are not meant to be considered true to life, they are being used for illustrative purposes only.

Some of the definitions I will use are my own, others can be found in Textbooks, Websites and Essays that are used to teach Logic and Deductive Reasoning.  If a definition is of my own creation, I will indicate it.

Let's get started.

TOPIC-  Gun control laws.

Reporter- "Senator, results from National Crime Reports indicate that your State, has one of the highest rates of violent crime and murder convictions in the nation. Do you think that your States Gun Laws are responsible for this, and what changes would you support to bring these rates more in line with the national average."

Senator- "My Constituents believe that the Second Amendment is essential to guarantee the Freedom of all Americans.  If we start taking away Guns from law-abiding Americans, then only the Criminals will have them."

This is what I label as a case of:

MISDIRECTION.

Magician, Magic, Cards, Attention

1)  A QUESTION IS ASKED ABOUT A CERTAIN TOPIC.

2)  THE ANSWER, WHILE STILL ON TOPIC, DOES NOT
ADDRESS THE INFORMATION CONTAINED IN THE
QUESTION.

3)  INSTEAD, THE RESPONSE ATTEMPTS TO TURN THE
CONVERSATION INTO AN AREA OF THE TOPIC NOT
COVERED BY THE INITIAL QUESTION.

This is a Tactic of many politicians, who want to avoid controversy by not taking a stand that may upset a certain portion of the electorate.

Why do I call it MISDIRECTION?-  Those of you familiar with Stage Magicians know that the success of many illusions relies on getting the audience to pay attention to what one hand is doing, while ignoring the other.  It is this hand that is actually performing the necessary work to make the Trick believable.

MISDIRECTION in the above example, (Gun Control Laws), is an attempt to draw attention away from what is actually asked, and focus it on information that has nothing to do with the question. Since it remains on Topic, the answer is the deception to draw attention away from the initial question, and focus it on unrelated information.
