APPLICATION DEADLINE APPROACHING: MARCH 20, 2019: SUMMER SEMINAR PHILOSOPHY OF STATISTICS.

APPLICATION DEADLINE APPROACHING: MARCH 20, 2019

SUMMER SEMINAR

PHILOSOPHY OF STATISTICS

Today’s statistical crisis of replication is causing much introspection among practitioners, and serious changes in evidence policies are being debated. The issues cry out for philosophical illumination. We will offer a 2-week immersive seminar on Philosophy of Statistics (PhilStat) for faculty and post-docs in philosophy who wish to acquire or strengthen their background in PhilStat as it relates to philosophical problems of evidence and inference, to today’s statistical crisis of replication, and associated evidence-policy debates. We also invite social scientists and methodology researchers interested in strengthening their philosophical scholarship in this arena. We will consider up to 2 advanced Ph.D. students working on a dissertation directly in this area*. Approximately 12–15 applicants will be selected.

Goals for participants:
  1. Gain the necessary background in statistical methodology to integrate PhilStat into their research and/or teaching.
  2. Study current debates between frequentist, Bayesian, likelihoodist and other methods, as they interrelate to (i) philosophical problems of evidence and inference, and to (ii) today’s data and statistical policy debates.
All accepted participants will receive housing and a stipend.

Place: Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA
Dates: July 28–August 11, 2019
Directors: Deborah Mayo (Philosophy) and Aris Spanos (Economics)

AMERICAN PHILOSOPHICAL ASSOCIATION. Important reminder about APA Pacific hotel reservations.

American Philosophical Association

Dear DAVID,

The 2019 Pacific Division meeting will be held April 17–20 at the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

If you’re planning to attend the 2019 APA Pacific Division meeting and haven’t yet made hotel reservations, . The APA conference rate of $185 (plus applicable taxes and fees) is valid through March 19. Rooms are available on a first-come, first-served basis and subject to availability.

Please note: While we understand that you have a choice of hotels, we do urge you to book at the conference hotel. Filling up our rooms gets us meeting space and the hotel rebates us 6% of bookings revenue. We use this to fund graduate student travel. Support the meeting and support students by staying in the conference hotel.

There is less than one month left to get the early bird discount on registration for the 2019 Pacific Division meeting! Online registration closes on April 3. Pacific meeting registration will not be available April 4 through April 16. If you don’t register online by April 3, you can still register on-site at the meeting—but note that on-site registration rates are $50 higher than early bird registration for all categories.

The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada Special Event Code for this event is 19TAPA. Many visitors to Canada need either an Electronic Travel Authorization or a visitor visa. If you are not a US or Canadian citizen, answer a few questions to find out what you need to travel to, or transit through, Canada.

We hope to see you in Vancouver!

All the best,

Amy E. Ferrer
