Honoring our armed forces. CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE JENNIFER WEXTON.

Today, we honor all of our armed forces and the sacrifices they make to protect our country. Here in Virginia, we’re fortunate to have a high population of active-duty military members and veterans. They contribute to our communities and our culture in this great Commonwealth, and we need to be absolutely certain that we are treating them with the utmost respect.

This includes honoring their service by making sure they receive the quality healthcare they deserve, as well as the education and training to transition to civilian jobs when their service ends.

Thank you to all of our armed forces today and every day,

Jennifer Wexton.

A Better Deal on Prescription Drugs, BBQ for Veterans & Their Families + MORE... U.S. CONGRESSMAN DAVID CICILLINE.

Dear David,

Like you, I believe no person in America should have to lay awake at night trying to decide whether they should get medicine to keep them healthy or make their rent payment or pay their mortgage.

Instead of addressing rising health care costs, Republicans in Congress and President Trump are doing just the opposite. They voted to weaken protections for people with pre-existing conditions, increase out-of-pocket expenses and premiums, and cut Medicare and Medicaid. And even the GOP tax scam included policies to raise Americans’ health care costs, and at the same time hand billions of dollars in tax cuts to huge pharmaceutical companies.

Americans deserve better than the raw deal that they’re getting from this administration and Republicans in Congress. And Democrats have proposed a bold new economic agenda - A Better Deal: Better Jobs, Better Wages, Better Future – to do just that.

Specifically, our plan drives down drug prices by allowing the federal government to negotiate lower prescription drug prices for Medicare; it requires drug manufacturers to publicly release hard data and information justifying any significant price increase; and it cracks down on price gouging in a very significant way.

Community Conversation & BBQ for Veterans & Their Families

We live in a free country thanks to the extraordinary actions, incredible bravery and dedicated service of our veterans. These heroic men and women have earned our gratitude, and deserve every opportunity to get ahead. That’s why I am excited to invite our state’s veterans and their families to a Community Conversation and BBQ over Memorial Day weekend. This event will be held:

Saturday, May 26th
12:00pm-2:00pm
Slater Memorial Park Pavilion
(To reach the pavilion, follow signs from the park entrances at 825 Armistice Boulevard, Pawtucket, or 426 Newport Avenue, Pawtucket)

The Community Conversation is free and open to veterans and their families. A BBQ lunch will be served. To RSVP, please email Marie Magee at Marie.Magee@mail.house.gov or call 729-5600.

Time Warner Merger

Since Donald Trump assumed the presidency, we have witnessed unacceptable political interference in law enforcement matters—including antitrust enforcement—that is without modern precedent. Just last week, the President’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, asserted that President Trump intervened to stop AT&T’s acquisition of Time Warner. As a result, I once again led House Democrats in calling for the White House and Department of Justice to release any and all communications related to the Time Warner merger.

Despite repeated requests for materials related to the Trump administration’s many conflicting claims on the matter, the Department of Justice has not yet provided Congress with any relevant information. This lack of compliance makes it nearly impossible for Congress to provide necessary oversight of this administration. The Department of Justice needs to come clean and release these critical documents.

Strengthening Cybersecurity

As we have seen time and time again, the United States needs to do more with our allies to enhance cybersecurity and protect our shared interests from the actions of malicious actors. That’s why, in the House Foreign Affairs Committee, I successfully attached an amendment to the Israel Security Assistance Act in order to direct the Secretary of State to conduct a report on the potential benefits of establishing a joint U.S.-Israel Cyber Center of Excellence.

This proposal for a joint Cyber Center of Excellence will leverage the experience, knowledge, and expertise of institutions of higher education, private sector entities, and government organizations to enhance cybersecurity and protect critical infrastructure. I look forward to receiving the Secretary’s analysis and working with members of both parties on this important initiative.

Help America Vote

In our democracy, there is no right more sacred than the right of the people to choose who governs, and it is critical that the public has confidence that our elections are conducted fairly and freely at all times. That’s why I was proud to work with my colleagues in the Delegation to secure more than $3 million to help Rhode Island upgrade its election infrastructure and protect our democracy from further foreign interference. On Monday, I joined with Rhode Island Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea as she announced her plan on how to use these resources, and I am confident that her leadership will continue to enhance the faith of all Rhode Islanders in our democratic system.

As always, if you or someone you know has any questions or concerns, please call my office at 729-5600 or send me an email at David.Cicilline@mail.house.gov. You can also click here to follow my work on Twitter.

Warm Regards,

LOGIC- IT'S NOT JUST FOR VULCANS, AND VIEWERS OF "THE BIG BANG THEORY." #6. SHELDON AND HIS MOTHER- POST HOC, ERGO PROPTER HOC, AND THE FALLACY OF TRUTH BY ASSOCIATION. PT 1.

Since Logic now how has its own page and category, I thought it might be appropriate if we took an example of a Logical Fallacy from "THE BIG BANG THEORY."  This one is called POST HOC, ERGO PROPTER HOC.

Also, this article will expand this example to include the Fallacy of TRUTH BY ASSOCIATION.

The first episode of the third season, entitled "THE ELECTRICAL CAN OPENER FLUCTUATION", Sheldon, Leonard, Howard and Raj return from their trip to the Magnetic North Pole.  As he is walking through the door into the apartment, Sheldon has the following exchange with his mother while on the phone:

"No mother, I could not feel your church group praying for my safety.  The fact that
I'm home safe does not prove that it worked. That logic is Post Hoc, Ergo Propter Hoc."

Translated from Latin, it means, "After this, therefore because of this."  It is the Logical Fallacy of assuming a causal relationship between two events, and excluding everything else without justification.

To make this easier to understand here is the breakdown;

                            Sheldon goes on his trip,

                                          Then,

Sheldons mom, and her church group pray
                                      for his safety,

                                           Then,

                            Sheldon returns home safely,

                                         Therefore,

                          The prayer ensured his safety.

What Sheldon could have pointed out, to his mother, is that his safe return could be the result of one, or  more of the following:

1)  Proper planning.

2)  Safety procedures that were followed while en route, or on the way home.

3)  Adequate Water, Food, Clothes etc, to amply supply their needs.

4)  Communications that allowed access to emergency aid from the outside world.

5)  The mental discipline and knowledge to meet any difficulty calmly and intellectually.

In other words, Sheldons mom concluded that the prayer was the reason for a safe
return, when in fact there may have been other reasons.

Before any of my readers, who believe in the power of prayer, say that I can't rule out Divine Intervention, my reply is simple;

I AM NOT TRYING TO.
END PT 1.
