David --
It’s finally starting to feel like spring here in New York, and with that, a new generation of young people are getting ready to graduate from high school and college and head into the world. That world may look very different than the world my classmates at Wellesley and I entered many years ago, but the issues we’re facing -- issues of inequality and what feels like progress being undone -- aren’t really that different at all. I have faith in this generation, though. Young people aren’t waiting to be invited to join the conversation anymore. They’re using their platforms to start critical conversations online and off. They’re taking the plunge and running for office themselves. They’re leading the largest march against gun violence our country has ever seen. The Alliance for Youth Action, another one of the groups that Onward Together is proud to support, is committed to harnessing the power of young people across the country. Take a moment to read more about some of the incredible things that young organizers have accomplished through the Alliance for Youth Action today -- and we’ll talk again soon. Onward! Hillary
The organization: Alliance for Youth Action
The organizers: Sarah Audelo, Executive Director The mission: To support and scale the work of local organizations, building a movement of young people, by young people, and for all people. The story: The Alliance for Youth Action was founded as the Bus Federation, named for the famed bus trips taken to knock doors for progressive causes largely in the pacific northwest. As they pivoted into winning national issue campaigns and supporting locally rooted youth organizing everywhere, they became the Alliance for Youth Action -- and the rest is history. The Alliance for Youth Action has been critical in winning LGBTQ non-discrimination ordinances in some of America’s most conservative states, leading young voter engagement efforts in key races up and down the ballot, piloting new policy ideas to improve our democracy like Automatic Voter Registration, and so much more. The latest: Wherever young people are doing good work in the progressive movement, the Alliance for Youth Action is likely to be found. #TurnUpTurnOut, their electoral engagement plan for 2018 includes registering thousands of young voters, pushing candidates on the issues young people care about most, and driving young voters to the polls via festive and fun tactics alongside more than 20 youth-led organizations in their network. They also produce the American Voter Guide, a handy reference that explains issues and candidates in a way that really makes sense and will be partnering with some of the biggest shops across the country to get these guides in the hands of potentially millions of young voters. The next step: Head to allianceforyouthaction.org to learn more right now and get involved in an issue campaign that you care about. |

Fiction-, Stories, Myths, and Legends. THE LESSON. PT 1.
"IT IS SAID THAT THE GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT OF ALL, IS TO STAND UPON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS, AND CONTINUE THEIR GOOD WORKS. IS THIS SO?"
"NO, IT IS THAT IN THE FUTURE, THERE ARE THOSE WHO SEEK TO STAND UPON YOUR SHOULDERS, AND CONTINUE YOUR GOOD WORKS."
The Student was ready. He had passed all the Exams, and was considered to be the Brightest and Most Capable of them all.
Yet, much Troubled him. His Teachers, Instructors, and Counselors were Highly Accomplished, and he had learned much. However, as he faced Graduation, his Life Path was still not Charted.
Told of all the Things he could do, and the paths he might take, it was Frustrating not to be able to single one out. Finally, he Decided what to do, and it shocked those close to him.
Many Years Before, there had lived in the area an Individual of such Wisdom, that All sought his Counsel. Teacher or Student, Man or Woman, it mattered not. All came to ask advice, for Failure never seemed to find him. It was said that his Intellect was so great, that to Limit it to the Classroom or Public Forum, would be a Crime against Reason.
However, as the Years Passed, the "Wise One," as all came to address him, grew so Exhausted by the constant Demand on his Time, that he left the City one Morning, to live a Solitary Life in the Mountains. He had acquired enough Wealth through the Years, (Gifts from Grateful Individuals whom he had Helped), to arrange for Food and other Supplies to be Delivered at a Specific Location, which he could pick up at his leisure. This was to be done on Certain Days, and Payment would be Tendered for the continuation of such services.
No one had seen the "Wise One" for several years, even though a few did search for him. It was said that he would be found when it was necessary, and not before.

Fiction- Stories, Myths and Legends. THE LEGEND OF THE VANISHING LIGHTHOUSE KEEPERS. PART 1.
( The following is a work of fiction, but is based on a real event.
All the names, locations and dates are taken from case studies of the actual event.)
The Captain of the Hesperus peered through his Spyglass and spoke to the man next to him. "Sorry Moore," he began,"I still don't see any sign of life, and we've hailed them three times."
The Captain of the Hesperus peered through his Spyglass and spoke to the man next to him. "Sorry Moore," he began,"I still don't see any sign of life, and we've hailed them three times."
Joseph Moore was standing next to Captain Harvie and along with the Helmsman, were the only three occupants on the Bridge. It was the day after Christmas, but there was no feeling of "Peace on Earth" or "Goodwill to Men" inside Moore. The Lighthouse on the island of Eilean Mor was still dark, and there was no sign of his three comrades.
Captain Harvie continued, "When we're about 150 yds out, I'll heave to and send in a landing party to investigate. I assume you'll want to be part of it?"
Moore nodded without looking at Harvie. "What could have happened," he thought to himself, "Why can't we make contact?" Moore knew that the bare flagpole, which was located near the living quarters, was a bad sign. Distress signals indicating problems on the island, could be relayed to neighboring islands or passing ships by raising certain signal flags available to the Keepers stationed on the island.
Captain Harvie was usually annoyed when someone aboard his ship did not answer his questions with a prompt verbal reply. He considered it to be a breach of etiquette and disrespectful to his command. However, this was different. He was familiar with the type of man it took to be a Lighthouse Keeper, and confrontation over this matter would lead to no good. Ultimately, it was his responsibility to get the Light working again, and to find out why it went out. He, therefore, would not risk antagonizing Moore. This man was his best bet in finding the truth.
End of PT 1.
